This is because our Sensei are truly "the ones who have come before". They have been taking classes and attending events at our dojo for most of their lives. They have been through all of the programs, all of the belts, all of the tests. They have taken the same journey to learn that they are now guiding others along. These teachers understand our school's philosophies and teaching methods because these things have been a part of their own lives since childhood. Not every student grows up to be a Sensei, but the few who do are exceptional young adults. Who will be next, will it be your child?
Sensei is the title our instructors use; we tell students that it means "teacher" in Japanese. The actual translation however is "a person born before another". This meaning is extremely relevant at a traditional dojo. Parents often admire how the young men and women who contribute to teaching are so good with children. Although these instructors have no children of their own, they are patient, kind and seem to know all of the "tricks" to training kids and keeping them focused.
